peace, but not so quiet2025
While visiting family in my old neighbourhood, I began photographing familiar streets and places. These images brought back childhood memories and sparked the idea of translating the environment into an interactive experience. Pixel art became the project's visual language. Its retro aesthetic and playful abstraction captured the nostalgia I wanted to convey, evoking the imagination and sense of wonder of childhood.
The main character established the visual direction and scale of the project. Through an iterative process, I developed a wider cast, giving each character a distinct appearance while maintaining a cohesive style.
Using my photographs as references, I reconstructed the neighbourhood's buildings in 3D, exploring perspective, composition and lighting. I then refined the environment through experiments with colour and texture.
Bringing the characters and environment together, the final scene reimagines a familiar place through the lens of memory. The process revealed a different kind of visual faithfulness, one that prioritises the feeling of a place over the accuracy of its representation.
